Biography

Member of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine (1995). Laureate of the Regional Prize named after Y. Bokshai and A. Erdeli (2002, 2006, 2009, 2013).

He was born in Mizhhiria village, Transcarpathian region. In 1981, he graduated from the Art Metal Department of the Uzhhorod Art College, his teachers were Yosyp Pal and Vasyl Petretskyi. In 1989, he completed his studies at the Faculty of Interior Design of the Lviv Art Institute, where his teacher was the famous sculptor Emmanuil Mysko. From 1989 to 2001 he worked as a lecturer at the Uzhhorod College of Arts. Vasyl Roman works in the genre of a sculpture of small forms, garden and park plastics. Since the beginning of his exhibition activity (1989), the artist's activity has been vivid, diverse and multidirectional: sculpture symposia, plein airs in Ukraine and abroad, internet projects, group and personal exhibitions, participation in numerous contests and projects, work in art councils, foundry.

The artist sees things non trivially, he always has taste and tact. His vision of form, the purposeful power of the idea gives rise to artefacts that are strong by their own existence, in which there is development, the harmony of rhythms, tension and fluidity of planes, excitement, the precision of nuances, the drama of lines.

The master’s works are notable in the Uzhhorod sculptural environment for the new sound in the usual genres. In particular, traditional plaques were reinterpreted in a new way, filled with the spirit of painting and graphics, they received a lyrical spirituality (works devoted to the musicologist Volodymyr Hoshovskyi (2006), to the artist Vasyl Habda (2009).

Vasyl Roman introduced new forms and stylistics into the church art by creating ideal stone throne in Uzhhorod temples, memorial objects, commemorative signs, architectural and decorative elements when restoring the episcopal residence and arranging Andrii Bachynskyi Square in Uzhhorod. In addition, he created a lot of artistic monuments. The sculptor literally took the burden of working with large stone, accurately found the proportions, verified the composition and ratio of the tones of polished granite. The monuments breathe with artistic power (monuments on the graves of the poet Petro Skunts (2009), writer Yurii Kerekesh (2010), artists Pavlo Bedzir and Lisa Kremnytska (2011), Viacheslav Prykhodko (2013).

He received the regional prize named after Y. Bokshai and A. Erdeli in the nomination "sculpture" for the memorial plaques to "Neuropathologist D. Snihurskyi" (2002) and "People's Artist of Ukraine Vasyl Habda" (2009), as well as in the nomination "monumental art" for the work "Memorial composition on the graves of Professor Volodymyr Slyvka "(2006) and the sculpture" Portrait of L. Tolstoi" (2013).

The participant of art exhibitions: regional – since 1989, all-Ukrainian – since 1988, symposia of sculpture in stone (Ukraine, Russia, Hungary, and Romania).
