CHUBIRKO SERHII

He was born in 1969 in Pidpolozzia village, Volovets district, Transcarpathia. According to art historians, he attracted the attention of specialists during his studies at the Uzhhorod College of Arts, where he graduated from in 1989.

After two years of service in the army from 1994 to 2000, he studied at the Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture named after I. Repin in St. Petersburg. At this stage, the artist distinguished himself by having received the Academy's annual award for the best drawing, and 15 of his works were included in the book "A Training Drawing". Student drawings of Chubirko were bought not only by collectors from different countries but also by museums in Spain and Los Angeles.

The artist continued his studies at the Academy’s graduate school. After three years of scientific work, he was invited to teach in China. For seven months, he was teaching drawing to the students of the Fine Arts Academy in Chengdu, Sichuan Province. Since 2010, he has been living and working in Florence, where he teaches to students from different countries at a private academy.

In 2003, he created a series of portraits of honourable citizens of St. Petersburg in the framework of the project "The Ceremonial Portrait of St. Petersburg", dedicated to the 300th city anniversary.  In 2007 – 2010, he created a series of portraits of the clergy of the Catholic Church. He was working on the portrait of Pope Benedict XVI in the Vatican.

However, despite the great geographical experience, the artist still carries Transcarpathia in his heart. It is evident in his diploma work "Transcarpathian Koliada". According to art critics, in this painting one can feel the mysticism and magnetism of the mountainous region and at the same something from the Middle Ages of Brueghel. Serhii himself admits that he feels like a visitor everywhere, therefore, he would like to return to Transcarpathia.

Since 2002 he has been an active participant in all-Ukrainian and international exhibitions, namely in St. Petersburg (Russia, 2002), Uzhhorod (2013), Friborg (Switzerland, 2014), Fiuggi, Tavarnelle Val di Pesa (Italy, 2014), Palazzo Medici Riccardi (Florence, Italy, 2015). His personal exhibitions were held in China (Chengdu (2007), Guangzhou (2008).

The artist's works are in private and state collections in the USA, China, Germany, Italy, Vatican City, Spain, and the Czech Republic.
