He was born on 30 May 1864 in Uzhhorod. He studied fine arts in Budapest, Munich, and in the art colony of Nagybánya. The teachers of Karvaly were such artists as Bertalan Karlovszky and Bertalan Székely, later – Simon Hollósy. In 1899, the artist went to Italy for a study trip.
Since the early 1900s, he took part in art exhibitions. His paintings were also presented in the Hungarian art gallery. In the same period, he created a series of art posters in the style of Art Nouveau. The artist's paintings are made in a realistic style. The main genres of the artist - portrait and thematic paintings, sometimes sceneries.
"In contrast to the academic balance in painting, he was a bohemian man whose name was almost completely forgotten in Hungary at the end of his life and after his death," in such a way his close friend the famous Hungarian artist Gyula Hegedűs described the artist.
It was his portrait that the artist considered to be one of the most successful of his works.
József’s elder brother Móric Karvaly became an artist as well.
József Karvaly died in Budapest on 17 November 1928.
