Biography

Member of the creative association of artists and craftsmen of Khust “Artist Of Verkhovyna” (2012). Member of the National Union of Masters of Folk Art of Ukraine (2013).

He was born on 28 September 1956 in Khust, Transcarpathia. Anatolii's creative abilities were noticed since his childhood. He loved to paint ancient castles, fortresses, medieval battle scenes. And he liked music. So it is not surprising that the boy visited a fine arts and music studios, where he took the lessons of playing accordion.

In 1978, Anatolii graduated from the Uzhhorod School of Applied Arts, where he studied at the Department of Wood Art Processing.

He began to work as a graphic designer at the Khust shoe factory. At the same time, he joined the local music band “Metronome”, where he played drums and sometimes was a lead singer.

Since 1983, the artist, together with his family, has been living in Berehivshchyna (Transcarpathian region), where he initially worked as a designer at the research institute of the agro-industrial complex. In 1984, the artist became part of the “Sinus” musical ensemble, and also began to be seriously engaged in painting.

He works in two directions, one of them is figurative, in which he creates watercolour and oil paintings, collages, works in mixed technique. His favourite genres: still lifes, landscapes, in which the native land is depicted in all its amazing beauty, as well as everyday genre scenes from everyday life.  

Another direction is decorative and applied, where the master manifests itself in wood carving, painting on glass, making Venetian carnival masks of papier-mache, painting Easter eggs, decorating bottles and experimenting with edible works of art.

A special place in the artist's work takes carving. In the works of Anatolii Sakalosh, there is a continuation of the life of Transcarpathian school of decorative and applied art, preservation of folk traditions. It's not surprising, as he was a student of outstanding artists and teachers of the region – V. Svyda, I. Harapko, V. Demydiuk, V. Petretskyi and I. Pal. The themes of the works, subject compositions are diverse: some depict eternal human values, others suggest philosophical reflections.

From 1994 to 2002, he worked at the Joint Stock Company “Victoria” in the experimental shop as a carver. In 1994, the artist demonstrated his works for the first time at a personal exhibition held in the premises of the district state administration. Anatolii Sakalosh joined the creative association of Berehivshchyna “Bereh”, in which he actively presented his creative work.

From 2002 to 2008, the artist was engaged in the restoration and reconstruction of historical and sacral buildings in the Czech Republic, including restoring altars in ancient churches and wall paintings. Subsequently, he worked in the culture department of the Berehovo District State Administration.

Since 1994, Anatolii Sakalosh is a regular participant in exhibition and plein air events. The author held several personal exhibitions, and his fine artworks and those of decorative and applied arts were exhibited at the galleries of Transcarpathia, Kyiv (Ukrainian House), Hungary and Poland. The works of the artist are kept in private collections in Ukraine, Russia, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, England, Israel, and the USA.
