MOLNAR ISTVAN

Оne of the brightest and most talented figures of the youth culture of Transcarpathia and Western Ukraine of the late 1980s – early 1990s. He was born in the Hungarian family in Mukachevo. Since his school years he attended art studio of Zoltan Bakonii in Uzhhorod. In 1982-1987 he studied at the Uzhhorod College of Applied Art. He was fond of rock music, which became an integral part of his life and creativity. After graduating from college together with his fellow musicians he created a rock band “St. Pauli Guys”. At that time I. Molnar was surrounded by the informal group of young artists called “Left eye”. Within 1989-1993 he continued his education at Lviv State Institute of Applied and Decorative arts, had internship in Hungary.

The fate gave the gifted artist less than seven years of active work. Short, but extremely vivid and powerful period, during which he created dozens of extraordinary art works (mostly presented to his friends) and participated in a series of exhibitions of the “Left eye” group in Uzhhorod, Lviv, Budapest, Katowice, Berlin, Chicago... A fatal disease took the life of the 25-year-old artist, thus somehow tragically paradoxical repeating the fate of the Austrian expressionist Egon Schiele, the style of whom is echoed in some canvases of I. Molnar. Being modern and contemporary in the era of “late rock' n 'roll”, his works still impress with frankness, depth of content, telling expression and timeless artistic power.
