Endred Yurii

He was born on 20 August 1910 in Mukachevo. At the age of ten, together with his parents, he moved to Győr (Hungary). He studied at the Hungarian Royal Academy of Fine Arts from 1928 to 1935. His mentors were famous artists of realistic painting and graphics Oszkár Glatz and Varga Nándor Lajos. His teacher was also Bertalan Karlovszky, a well-known artist born in Mukachevo as well.

After studying he travelled around Italy and Austria a lot, improving his artistic talent. In 1936, he moved to Dunaföldvár (Hungary) where he got a position of a teacher of art in a local school. In 1939, György Endrédy received an offer to teach at the Drugeths Royal Gymnasium in Uzhhorod. Without hesitation, he returned to Transcarpathia. Among his students there were Vasyl Habda, Yulii Stashko and Istvan Szőke, who later became the famous artists. In 1944, the artist was sent to the front. During the battles, he was captured by the Soviet forces. After the war, he settled in Budapest.

Among the works of György Endrédy, there are both oil painting and graphics. To implement his artistic ideas and show the nuances of natural emotions, the artist easily changed graphics techniques – watercolour, pencil, pastel, sanguine and lineography. Among the genres chosen by the artist, there were landscapes, still lifes and architectural views of cities and towns.

The artist’s personal exhibitions were held at the centre UVATERV and Budapest Palace of Art (1968, 1969, 1984), Győr (1969), Tokaj (1972), Sopron (Hungary, 1986) and abroad, in Saint-Louis, the USA (1986).

The works of the artist are kept at the Hungarian National Gallery.

György Endrédy died in 1988 in Budapest.
