Biography

Mariia Basarab was born in Nove Davydkovo village, Mukachevo district, Transcarpathia. Since her childhood, she felt the desire for creativity: when a schoolgirl she was fond of works by Raphael, Ribera and Murillo. At home, she secretly copied biblical stories of the world-famous stories. However, in 1958 she entered the Biological Faculty of the Uzhhorod State University. The training allowed the future artist to travel around Transcarpathia and fall in love with the incredible landscapes of the native land.

In 1978, the artist moved to Uzhhorod, started her self-education in painting. She had individual drawing lessons with Fedir Manailo.

When Ukraine became independent, the artist entered the Uzhhorod City Creative Association "Colours of the Carpathians". It was here where her creative path started. She actively participated in all city and regional exhibitions, as well as thematic exhibitions and association contests. For her fruitful work, the artist received a number of awards and diplomas of various degrees, in particular, such works as "Winter, But The Forest Is Still Awake", "Summer Has Already Passed", "Outskirts of Vorochevo Village", "Landscape with Nevytskyi Castle", "First Snow".

The artist works mainly in the field of oil painting. In her work, there are incredible landscapes, genre works. The author successfully works with colours. She prefers warm, sunny tones – "Summer in the Carpathians" (1996), "Landscape with Nevytskyi Castle" (2004). Her works are vivid and rich, each conveys the incredible beauty of her native land – "Autumn Diversity" (1997), "Mukachevo Castle" (1998), "First Snow" (2000), "Winter Tale" (2001), "This Is My Transcarpathia" (2004), "Autumn Gold" (2005). Among the works of the artist, there are a lot of still lifes – graceful and tender: "Sunflowers" (1998), "Roses On a Chair" (1998), "Roses" (2000), "Irises" (2003), and others. The artist's paintings are filled with warmth and emotional performance that is felt in each sharpened brush stroke.

Mariia Basarab has a number of personal exhibitions. The artist's paintings are in private collections of Uzhhorod, Kyiv, Kharkiv, as well as in Slovakia, Hungary, and Israel. In 2004, the publishing house "Patent" issued a catalogue of works by Mariia Basarab.
