Biography
Yosyp Bokshai is an outstanding Ukrainian artist, who together with A. Erdeli became the founder of new art, art education, and art unions in Transcarpathia. Honoured Art Figure of USSR (1951). People’s Artist of Ukraine (1960) and the USSR (1963), Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Arts (1958).
Yosyp Bokshai was born October 2, 1891 in Kobyletska Poliana village in the family of a priest. From 1910 to 1914 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest, where the famous Hungarian artist Imre Reves was his teacher. From 1919 to 1945 he worked in the Uzhhorod Real Gymnasium. He participated in public life – in the work of the Russian National Council (1918 – 1919), in the foundation of the association "Prosvita" (1920), in the organization of exhibitions. In order to obtain new knowledge and skills, he travelled to Italy, Yugoslavia, Germany, and France. The pursuit of perfection subsequently led to the conviction: "An artist must be highly educated, culturally intelligent person, without any hint of provincialism."
Since 1918, Yosyp Bokshai worked in the landscape genre, attained virtuosic mastery in the work of pastel and subsequently oil paints. He drew genre scenes from folk life, figurative compositions, still lifes, religious motifs, icons, performs large-scale monumental murals in churches. Everything, touched by his hand, appeared in a new picturesque quality, blossomed with richness of the colours, showed the outstanding sense of colour, the author’s vision of the colours, and his virtuosic mastery of compositional techniques. The artist confessed that the ideas, images for pictures were prompted to him by the surrounding world: “Painting is the mirror of everything beautiful that the universe offers us.”
In the artist's work the impressionistic palette is combined with the enthusiasm of the old masters, which is especially noticeable in Bokshai’s religious painting. Realistic works are often marked by a hint of romanticism.
In 1930s Yosyp Bokshai participated in exhibitions in Prague, Brno, Bratislava, Kosice, Budapest, Uzhhorod, and Mukachevo. After the war, he participated in all significant exhibitions in Ukraine and the Soviet Union. Some works of the interwar period: "Self-portrait" (1925), "Market in Uzhhorod" (1926), "Winter", "First Frost", "Old Bridge" (1927), "View of Uzhhorod" (1928), "Uzhok" (1931), "Uzhotskyi Bell-ringer" (1934), "Old Mill in Uzhok" (1936), "Church in Izky" (1930).
Yosyp Bokshai was a very religious person. From his early age, he was fond of developing sketches of church paintings. The most famous artist’s works in this field are the painting of the plafond of the Uzhhorod Cathedral "Elevation of the Honest God's Cross" (1939), and painting in one of the most famous churches in Hungary - the church of Maria Povch village, where the unique miraculous icon of the Blessed Virgin is kept. All Bokshai’s works devoted to the sacred themes cannot be enumerated: paintings, panels intended for decorating churches, portraits of religious figures. The most famous works are "Sermon" (1926), "St. John Chrysostom", "Teachers of the Eastern Ecumenical Church", "Holy Russian Land" (1934 – 1935). The iconostasis in Dorobratovo village. For all his life, Yosyp Bokshai created more than a thousand paintings, and although there are genre paintings, portraits, and still lifes among his works, he is still a recognized master of landscape. He said about his passion: “Nature is the artist’s main teacher.” He embodied this idea creating such paintings as "Summer Day", "Autumn Crimson" (1943), "Lake in the Mountains" (1946), "Synevyr" (1952), "Blackthorn Blooms" (1953), "Polonyna Rivna"(1954), and many others.
